"Bound by NOCs: Mujeeb Ur Rahman's Challenge in the 2023/24 BBL"

Mujeeb Ur Rahman

Mujeeb Ur Rahman will miss Melbourne Renegades’ upcoming games in the 2023/24 Big Bash League, as the terms of his No-Objection Certificate (NOC) have changed. Last month, Mujib, along with Naveen-ul-Haq and Fazl Haq Farooki, faced sanctions from the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) for opting out of intermediate leagues for the first time in T20 matches. Therefore, the ACB considered this as a neglect of national duty and fined the players, withholding their NOCs for two years, thereby restricting their participation in overseas leagues.

Despite the ACB statement on December 25, Mujib played two games for the Melbourne Renegades without receiving any communication regarding the change in possession, but on January 1, the Renegades announced that Mujib was unavailable for the upcoming game against the Melbourne Stars, citing alterations in his NOC conditions.

On the contrary, Naveen-ul-Haq and Fazal Haq Farooqi, the other players accepted, expressed a strong desire to represent Afghanistan once again, after which they were selected for the T20I series against the UAE. In Mujib's case, he was not selected for the series, then he in BBL opted to continue playing.

Looking back last month, Kolkata Knight Riders acquired Mujeeb for the 2024 IPL at a price of Rs 2 crore. This season, freshly signed by Lucknow Super Giants, Farooqui continued with Sunrisers Hyderabad after the 2023 season.

This series highlights the impact of NOC conditions on player participation in league tournaments, highlighting the delicate balance between state services and private career choices in the world of cricket.
