In an exciting match at the ICC Men's World Cup 2023, Bangladesh achieved a victory by chasing down a target of 280 runs to defeat Sri Lanka by 3 wickets. This win ended Sri Lanka's chances of moving forward in the tournament.
Despite losing two early wickets - Tanzid Hasan (9) and Litton Das (23) - Bangladesh managed to stabilize the game. Najmul Hossain Shanto (90) and their captain, Shakib Al Hasan (82), played important roles with a partnership of 169 runs. Even though they lost more wickets, Bangladesh reached the target with three wickets left in 41.1 overs.
This victory not only meant a win for Bangladesh but also meant that Sri Lanka was out of the World Cup. The key performer for Sri Lanka was Dilshan Madushanka, who took three wickets. Maheesh Theekshana and Angelo Mathews took two wickets each.
With this win, Bangladesh moved up to the 7th position in the tournament, earning 4 points and having a net run rate of (-)1.142. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, dropped to the 8th spot with 4 points and a net run rate of (-)1.160.
Sri Lanka's innings relied on Charith Asalanka, who scored a century and helped his team reach a total of 279 runs. However, Bangladesh's bowlers made a strong comeback in the final overs. Tanzim Hasan Sakib took three wickets, and during the match, Shakib Al Hasan requested a TIME OUT when Angelo Mathews needed to replace his damaged helmet.
Bangladesh's bowlers were in control throughout the match, taking early wickets and putting Sri Lanka in a tough position. They dismissed Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Perera, and Kusal Mendis, leaving Charith Asalanka and Sadeera Samarawickrama at the crease.
In this match, Bangladesh batted first and played at the Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium in Delhi. Sri Lanka's captain, Kusal Mendis, aimed to set a target of over 300 runs.
Bangladesh had a tough journey in the World Cup, losing six out of seven matches after their opening victory against Afghanistan. In their previous match against Pakistan, they struggled to score competitively and were dismissed for 204 runs. Their bowlers also found it hard to restrict runs.
On the other hand, Sri Lanka had a decent World Cup campaign until their recent losses to Afghanistan and India. A significant 302-run loss to India marked the end of their journey in the tournament, ruling them out of the semi-finals.
Even though Dilshan Madushanka stood out as one of the top wicket-takers in the tournament for Sri Lanka, the overall bowling performance was not up to par. Sri Lanka also had the memory of a heavy defeat against India, where they were bowled out for just 55 runs.
